Trent Shares: Analysts Divided on Valuation Amid Strong Performance & Growth

· · 2 min read

Despite demanding valuations, a majority of brokerages maintain 'Buy' ratings on Trent Ltd. Analysts set price targets ranging from Rs 2,950 to Rs 4,455, citing strong margin expansion and strategic store growth post-June quarter results.

Following its June quarter results, Tata Group retailer Trent Ltd has seen a mixed but largely positive response from financial analysts. While a majority of the 14 brokerages that revisited their target prices retained 'Buy' ratings, concerns about the stock's demanding valuations persist.

Analyst Price Targets and Recommendations

The consensus target price for Trent shares stands at Rs 3,454, implying an 11.2 percent potential upside from current levels. However, individual brokerages offer a wide range of outlooks:

  • Highest Target: Antique Stock Broking projects the highest target at Rs 4,455.
  • Lowest Target: Citi has the lowest target at Rs 2,950, holding the sole 'Sell' recommendation among the 14 firms.

Other notable recommendations include:

  • Macquarie and Bernstein: 'Outperform' with targets of Rs 3,600 and Rs 3,500, respectively.
  • UBS: 'Buy', raising its target to Rs 3,800 from Rs 3,633.
  • HSBC: 'Buy', marginally increasing its target to Rs 3,390 from Rs 3,370.
  • Morgan Stanley: 'Overweight' with a target of Rs 3,406.
  • MOFSL: 'Buy' with a target of Rs 3,775.
  • Nuvama Institutional Equities: 'Buy' with a revised target of Rs 3,591 (from Rs 3,219).
  • Goldman Sachs: 'Neutral' with a target of Rs 3,000.

  • Ambit Capital: Target of Rs 3,536.

Key Drivers: Margin Expansion and Strategic Growth

Analysts highlighted Trent's ability to deliver strong margin expansion in the June quarter, even in the face of emerging raw material inflation and supply chain risks. Management initiatives, including supplier engagement and calibrated pricing, are expected to help preserve these margins.

A key strategic focus for Trent is prioritizing cluster-level revenue growth and increasing market share in crucial micro-markets over traditional store-level like-for-like (LFL) growth. The company is deepening penetration in its value fashion brand Zudio while accelerating store additions for Westside.

"While valuations remain demanding at 62 times FY28 EPS, sustained execution on store expansion, driving market share gains with potential upside on margins, and the scaling of emerging categories keep us constructive," noted MOFSL, reflecting the sentiment of many 'Buy' recommendations.

Nuvama Institutional Equities also pointed out that cost efficiency played a crucial role in mitigating muted Q1 sales, with the consistent margin surprise cushioning the business from operational deleverage.

Valuation Concerns Remain

Despite the positive operational performance and growth strategies, valuations remain a significant point of discussion. Several brokerages, while recommending a 'Buy', acknowledged that Trent's stock trades at demanding multiples, with Nuvama noting it trades at 72 times/58 times FY27E/28E EPS.
