Nothing's CMF Sub-Brand to Become Independent Indian Company, Says CEO Carl Pei

· · 2 min read

Nothing's sub-brand CMF will transition into a standalone Indian company with majority Indian ownership, Carl Pei announced. Nothing will retain a stake, shifting CMF's focus to innovation and product development within India.

Nothing's sub-brand, CMF, is set to become an independent Indian company with majority Indian ownership, according to an announcement from Nothing co-founder and CEO Carl Pei. This strategic move signifies a significant shift for the brand, focusing on local innovation and product development within India.

CMF's New Indian Identity

In a recent post, Carl Pei clarified that while Nothing will retain a stake in CMF, it will no longer function as the parent company. CMF will be "majority Indian owned, headquartered in India, with its own team and R&D in the country." This transition aims to foster a global consumer electronics company rooted in India.

Pei emphasized that CMF's expanded role in India will concentrate on engineering, product development, and establishing its own research and development capabilities. Importantly, while India will become a hub for design and development, device assembly and manufacturing will not occur domestically for CMF products.

India's Evolving Role in Tech

Carl Pei highlighted that despite nearly 99% of smartphones sold in India being manufactured domestically, a significant portion of intellectual property, product design, and engineering work still originates outside the country. CMF's restructuring is designed to address this gap, creating an India-based entity that is owned, operated, and engineered entirely within India.

"Manufacturing was step one. Step two is R&D," Pei stated, expressing his vision for the company to eventually produce 100 million smartphones annually. He drew parallels to the paths taken by Japan, South Korea, and China, which built robust manufacturing ecosystems before developing globally recognized consumer-tech brands. Pei believes India is now at a similar juncture, requiring more companies to invest in product design, engineering, and R&D domestically, with CMF poised to lead this ambition.

Implications for Nothing and Consumers

For consumers, the immediate product front will see no changes. However, CMF will undergo substantial corporate restructuring. Nothing will continue its involvement with CMF as a shareholder and partner, benefiting from CMF's independent Indian team and R&D operations. Both Nothing and CMF aim to expand their expertise in engineering, product design, and technology within India, with plans to develop and engineer products locally for global markets. As Pei noted, "Being a partner means the company is Indian: owned in India, run from India, engineered in India."
