Before its iconic rebranding, the Vande Bharat Express was known as “Train 18”. This name was a testament to the remarkable feat of engineering and manufacturing: the entire train set was conceived, designed, and built in just 18 months at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This initiative marked India's first indigenous engine-less train set, a proud achievement under the government’s 'Make in India' campaign.
During its trial runs in 2018, Train 18 captivated national attention by reaching speeds of nearly 180 kmph. Often hailed as the “Father of Vande Bharat,” Sudhanshu Mani played a pivotal role in bringing this ambitious project to fruition. As the General Manager of the ICF, he spearheaded a dedicated team of engineers and designers who conceptualized and developed Train 18 entirely without foreign assistance. Under his astute leadership, the team completed the project in record time, showcasing India's formidable engineering prowess and manufacturing expertise. In January 2019, the Ministry of Railways officially renamed the train the Vande Bharat Express. This new name was carefully chosen to underscore the train's indigenous origins and to celebrate India's burgeoning self-reliance in the realms of technology and manufacturing.
The inaugural Vande Bharat Express service was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2019, connecting the capital city of New Delhi with Varanasi.
