· · 3 min read

Producer Namit Malhotra, the visionary behind the upcoming Ramayana film, revealed he lost 90% of his personal wealth during the 2008 global financial crisis. He shared his incredible journey from a Mumbai garage startup to leading a global visual effects powerhouse at the film's Los Angeles premiere.

During a special presentation of his ambitious two-part film Ramayana at the Academy Theatre in Los Angeles, producer Namit Malhotra disclosed a significant personal setback from 2008. Malhotra, whose family net worth is now estimated at ₹16,000 crore, told the audience he lost 90 percent of his wealth during the global financial downturn that year.

The 50-year-old producer described the experience as a pivotal moment in his career, shaping his path from a humble Mumbai garage venture to helming one of the world's leading visual effects companies. He reflected on his journey since moving to Los Angeles in 2007, aiming to bridge Indian and Western filmmaking.

“An immigrant, who lost 90% of his wealth with the fun times in 2008, as I am sure some of you may remember, to bounce back today and being able to bring the biggest independent production in the world… I can’t even tell you what it feels like to stand here today and say this,” Malhotra stated, emphasizing the profound significance of his current projects.

From Garage to Global VFX Empire

Malhotra's entrepreneurial journey began at age 19 with a small video-editing and computer-graphics startup in a Mumbai garage. This initial venture, Prime Focus, eventually evolved into DNEG, the acclaimed visual effects company that boasts eight Academy Awards, seven of which were for visual effects over the past 11 years. DNEG has collaborated with renowned filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, cementing its reputation in the industry.

The ₹4,000-Crore Vision: Ramayana

Now, Malhotra is producing Ramayana, a two-part cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and co-produced by Kannada star Yash. With a reported combined budget of ₹4,000 crore, it stands as one of the most ambitious independent film productions globally. The film features a stellar cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Ravi Dubey, and is a collaboration between Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, DNEG, and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.

An "Oscar Moment" in Los Angeles

Malhotra referred to the Los Angeles premiere event as his “Oscar moment,” explaining that he chose the Academy Theatre to symbolize the recognition he had long sought. He highlighted the film’s objective to introduce Indian storytelling and culture to a worldwide audience, noting the collaboration of top talent from both India and the West, including Hans Zimmer, Terry Notary, and Ravi Bansal.

His remarkable recovery from the 2008 financial crisis is underscored by his family's estimated net worth of ₹16,000 crore in the Hurun India Rich List 2026, a testament to his resilience and strategic vision.
