OpenAI is set to transform the user experience of ChatGPT by integrating advanced "Work" capabilities directly into its main chat interface. This significant update aims to create a more unified workspace, allowing users to transition seamlessly between casual conversations and complex, multi-step tasks without needing to switch between different modes or tabs.
Streamlined Workflow for Enhanced Productivity
The upcoming interface change means that features previously confined to ChatGPT's dedicated Work tab will now be accessible within the regular chat experience. Users will be able to bring files and plugins into this combined environment, leveraging the AI assistant to perform demanding tasks such as building websites, creating presentations, or executing various operations directly on the web. The system is designed to allow users to review the AI's progress and provide guidance throughout the task execution, fostering a collaborative workflow.
This streamlined approach is expected to enhance productivity by reducing fragmentation and making ChatGPT a more comprehensive tool for everyday professional and creative endeavors. The initial rollout will target a select group of users for feedback before a wider deployment.
Shared Token Allowance for Paid Plans
Alongside the interface enhancements, OpenAI is also updating its usage policy for certain paid plans. Starting in December, subscribers to Plus, Pro, and Business plans will find that their usage of both ChatGPT and Codex will draw from a common token allowance. This change means that more advanced models and complex tasks, which typically consume more tokens, will contribute to a single, shared limit.
It's important to note that everyday "Instant chats" will remain outside this shared token pool, preserving their current usage model. Subscribers will have the ability to monitor their combined remaining usage and reset times directly within the Settings section of their account. Should a user reach their allowance limit, options will include waiting for the next reset period, upgrading their current plan, or purchasing additional credits to continue accessing eligible features.
OpenAI anticipates that most users will not experience more frequent resets than they do currently, though individual usage patterns may vary. This move follows a similar strategy by competitor Anthropic, which integrated its Claude AI's chat and Cowork functions into a single screen in September.
While the core ChatGPT experience is being unified, Codex will continue to operate as a separate application within the ChatGPT desktop environment. OpenAI has not yet specified a definitive date for the full rollout of the combined interface to all users.
