The Walt Disney Company has announced the appointment of Karandeep Anand as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Anand, an Indian-origin executive, will assume the role on October 2, reporting directly to CEO Josh D’Amaro. His appointment signals Disney's intensified focus on digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and unified technological development across its diverse global businesses.
New Leadership for Digital Innovation
In his new capacity as CTO, Karandeep Anand will be responsible for a broad spectrum of Disney's technological initiatives. This includes overseeing enterprise technology, core infrastructure, data and AI platforms, and all product and engineering teams. He will also collaborate closely with segment-specific technology teams throughout the organization to modernize how Disney develops and deploys technology, aiming for a more connected and seamless experience for fans worldwide.
Anand's Extensive Background
Anand brings a wealth of experience to Disney. Most recently, he served as the CEO of Character.AI, where he guided the company through a period of significant growth and helped build one of the most engaged consumer AI user bases, prioritizing user trust and safety. Prior to Character.AI, he was the President and Chief Product Officer at the fintech company Brex.
His career also includes several leadership roles at Meta, where he was Vice President of Ads & Business Products. Earlier, Anand spent 15 years at Microsoft, holding senior positions in product and engineering, notably contributing to the development of the Azure platform. He holds a Computer Science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad.
Disney's Strategic Technology Push
CEO Josh D’Amaro emphasized that Anand's leadership will align with Disney's core priorities: prioritizing storytelling, leveraging technology to foster creativity, and operating as 'One Disney'. Since becoming CEO, D’Amaro has consistently highlighted the importance of strengthening direct connections with Disney fans and offering a more integrated experience, with Disney+ serving as a central digital hub.
Anand expressed his enthusiasm for building upon Disney's existing technological capabilities. He stated his goal is to help the company connect its global fanbase with beloved stories and characters in innovative new ways, further cementing Disney's position at the forefront of entertainment and digital engagement.
