Move Your Wi-Fi Router Away From the TV for Faster, More Reliable Internet

· · 2 min read

Placing your Wi-Fi router next to a television can significantly degrade signal quality due to metal interference and radio congestion. Relocate your router to a central, open space, away from large electronic devices, to improve speed and reliability.

Are you experiencing frustratingly slow Wi-Fi speeds or frequent connection drops at home? Before investing in a new router or upgrading your internet plan, consider a simple adjustment that could dramatically improve your wireless experience: your Wi-Fi router's placement.

Why Your TV Interferes with Wi-Fi Signals

It's a common setup: the Wi-Fi router tucked conveniently next to the television. However, this seemingly innocuous placement can be a major culprit behind poor signal quality. Modern televisions, especially smart TVs, contain numerous metal components within their frames, displays, and internal circuitry. These metals are notorious for absorbing and reflecting the electromagnetic waves that carry Wi-Fi data, leading to:

  • Weaker coverage across your home.
  • Slower download and upload speeds.
  • More frequent connection instability and drops.

Beyond physical obstruction, many smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, soundbars, Bluetooth accessories, and even set-top boxes operate on the same 2.4GHz frequency band as many Wi-Fi routers. When multiple devices transmit on this crowded band simultaneously, they create radio interference and congestion. This electronic noise can further reduce Wi-Fi speeds, increase latency, and cause unstable connections.

While newer TVs connected via Ethernet or primarily utilizing the less-congested 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi bands might experience less noticeable interference, the general rule holds true for most household setups.

Optimal Wi-Fi Router Placement for Best Performance

To ensure you get the best possible Wi-Fi signals and consistent performance, rethink your router's location:

  1. Choose a Central Location: Position your router as close to the center of your home as possible. This allows the signal to radiate outwards evenly, maximizing coverage.
  2. Elevate the Router: Place the router on a raised shelf or a high table. Signals typically travel downwards, so an elevated position helps them reach devices on lower floors or across rooms more effectively.
  3. Keep it Open: Avoid placing the router inside cabinets, closets, or behind large furniture. These obstructions can block or dampen Wi-Fi signals.
  4. Distance from Electronics and Metal: Crucially, keep your Wi-Fi router away from large metal objects and other electronic devices known to cause interference. This includes televisions, microwaves, cordless phones, and even large metal appliances like refrigerators.

By making this one small change in your Wi-Fi router placement, you can significantly enhance your internet speed, improve reliability, and enjoy a smoother online experience throughout your home.
