Elon Musk's SpaceX is rapidly expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure business, with its latest financial disclosures revealing substantial growth but also a significant reliance on a single major customer.
SpaceX AI Infrastructure Sees Massive Growth
The company's Super Intelligence division, dedicated to providing computing services for AI companies, generated approximately $7.56 billion in revenue during the third quarter of 2026. This represents an astounding increase of nearly 830% compared to the same period in the previous year. Overall, SpaceX reported a 161.4% revenue growth for the quarter.
A Bloomberg report, citing sources familiar with the matter, identified AI company Anthropic as the primary driver of this growth. Regulatory filings showed that one customer, identified as Customer B, accounted for 34.5% of SpaceX's consolidated revenue. Another significant client, Customer A, contributed 16.6%.
Anthropic's Computing Commitments
Anthropic, known for its AI models, has been renting substantial computing capacity from SpaceX. Its IPO disclosures indicate that its computing commitments could reach an estimated $120.5 billion through 2029. Once the contracted capacity is fully available, payments could escalate to approximately $3.1 billion per month starting in December 2026.
Potential Revenue Risk from Customer Dependence
While the scale of Anthropic's agreement is impressive, it also highlights a potential revenue risk for SpaceX. The terms of the agreement allow Anthropic to terminate its computing services with a 90-day notice period after specified non-cancellable dates in January and March 2027. This flexibility means that SpaceX cannot necessarily rely on the full duration of the contract for its revenue projections.
SpaceX also supplies computing capacity to other major tech players, including Google, which reportedly pays around $920 million per month for services. However, the concentration of nearly 35% of its total revenue on a single customer like Anthropic underscores a strategic challenge.
For SpaceX, the ongoing task will be to sustain the rapid expansion of its AI infrastructure business while actively diversifying its customer base to mitigate the risks associated with such significant customer dependence. The growing contribution from AI computing is undeniably strengthening SpaceX's financial position, but the reliance on a few large clients remains a crucial factor to monitor.
