India's Air Defense Gets a Significant Boost

The FOC for the Netra AEW&C system is a landmark achievement for India's indigenous defense capabilities. It confirms that the system has successfully completed all necessary trials and evaluations, meeting the stringent operational requirements of the Indian Air Force. The Netra system is designed to provide comprehensive aerial surveillance and command and control functions, significantly enhancing the IAF's strategic awareness and response capabilities.

What is the Netra AEW&C System?

The Netra AEW&C system is an airborne platform developed by DRDO, mounted on a modified Embraer ERJ-145 regional jet. Its primary role is to detect, track, and identify airborne threats, including enemy aircraft and missiles, at extended ranges. It then relays this critical information to ground-based command centers and friendly fighter aircraft, enabling effective coordinated responses.

Key Features and Capabilities

At the heart of the Netra system is a state-of-the-art Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, offering 240-degree coverage. This advanced radar is complemented by a Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR), Electronic Support Measures (ESM), and Communication Support Measures (CSM), which together provide 360-degree situational awareness. These features allow the Netra to monitor a vast airspace, intercept communications, and provide crucial intelligence in real-time. Additionally, the system includes robust data link capabilities, ensuring seamless communication and data exchange with other air and ground assets.

The granting of FOC means the Netra AEW&C system is now fully certified for all operational roles within the IAF. Two such systems are already in service, and the FOC paves the way for their complete utilization and potential for further induction.
