The incident, which occurred on September 18, precedes Wakode's death by suicide and has since triggered a police investigation and student protests on campus.
Footage Details Exam Hall Incident
The exclusive footage shows Sahil Wakode seated at his desk during the ongoing examination. He is clearly seen operating a mobile phone. Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, observing the activity, approaches Wakode's desk.
Upon reaching the student, Professor Doolla takes Wakode's question paper and answer sheet. The video then shows Wakode being asked to leave the examination hall and being escorted out by the professor. Other students in the hall appear to continue with their exams, seemingly undisturbed by the unfolding event.
Investigation and Protests
The release of the footage comes as the Mumbai Police crime branch continues its investigation into Wakode's death. His parents have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the IIT Bombay director and Professor Doolla, alleging discrimination and seeking answers regarding the circumstances that led to their son's death.
The CCTV footage itself depicts only the events inside the examination centre and does not provide details about what transpired after Wakode was escorted from the room. Police are currently examining all aspects of the case, including the immediate aftermath of the exam hall incident.
In response to Wakode's death, students at IIT Bombay have staged protests, demanding an independent inquiry into the events and calling for reforms to the institute's disciplinary and student welfare policies. Wakode's parents have also filed a complaint under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, citing allegations of discrimination.
