Indian professionals residing in China recently convened at the Indian Embassy in Beijing for a rare Open House interaction, addressing a range of pressing issues with Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami and other consular officials. This marks one of the first such community outreach meetings in recent years, providing a direct platform for the diaspora to voice their challenges.
Key Concerns Raised by the Diaspora
A significant point of contention was the proliferation of anti-India content on various Chinese social media platforms. Members of the community highlighted abusive and negative remarks, often targeting Indian food and cultural practices, creating an atmosphere of online hostility.
Beyond online issues, attendees expressed growing frustration over a noticeable decline in work visas being issued to Indian professionals. Furthermore, many spouses of Indian workers face considerable difficulties in securing employment themselves within China, adding to the economic and logistical burdens on families. Challenges related to general consular services were also brought to the embassy's attention.
Embassy's Response and Future Plans
Ambassador Doraiswami acknowledged the severity of the online abuse, stating that Chinese authorities are aware of the increasing volume of such content and are actively taking steps to address it. The embassy, he added, is also working to counteract misinformation by disseminating fact-based information through its official social media channels, aiming to present a balanced narrative.
Looking ahead, the Ambassador announced measures to improve bilateral travel and support for the Indian community. From the following week, the embassy plans to simplify documentation requirements for Chinese citizens applying for Indian visas, streamlining the process for travel between the two nations.
In a bid to foster stronger cultural ties and promote India's heritage, the mission is organizing more cultural programs, building on successful events like the annual Vasant Mela. Additionally, the embassy is developing a mechanism in collaboration with legal professionals to provide assistance to Indian citizens grappling with work-related issues.
Ambassador Doraiswami assured the community that these Open House interactions would be organized regularly. This commitment aims to enhance consular services and ensure a consistent direct channel for the Indian diaspora to communicate their concerns and receive support from the mission.
