The Indian Navy has successfully completed a daring 48-hour operation, rescuing 20 Iranian crew members from a fishing vessel hijacked by armed Somali pirates. The rescue, which took place on November 2 in the Arabian Sea, more than 3,000 km from Mumbai, involved coordinated efforts by the Navy and Air Force.

Iran Expresses Gratitude for Swift Action

Following the successful mission, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi extended its sincere appreciation to the Government of India, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force. In a statement on X, the embassy commended the professionalism, courage, and effective coordination demonstrated by the Indian Armed Forces.

"We highly commend the professionalism, courage and effective coordination demonstrated by the Indian Armed Forces, reflecting India's strong commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and its role in saving lives beyond borders," the Iranian Embassy stated, highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the operation.

The embassy also emphasized that this humanitarian effort stands as a testament to the spirit of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between Iran and India.

Details of the Anti-Piracy Operation

The fishing vessel 'Azini' was hijacked by armed pirates off Somalia's northeastern coast in late October. Concerns were raised that the vessel could be used as a "mother ship" to launch further attacks on commercial shipping in the vital maritime region.

The Indian Navy swiftly deployed a warship to the area, supported by a maritime reconnaissance aircraft to locate and track the hijacked vessel. Through sustained surveillance, naval forces restricted the 'Azini's' movement, effectively preventing the pirates from escaping.

Marine Commandos Airdropped for Rescue

A crucial phase of the operation involved the Indian Air Force, which deployed a C-17 transport aircraft. This aircraft was used to airdrop Marine Commandos (MARCOS) directly into the operational area. The elite commandos subsequently secured the vessel and successfully freed all 20 Iranian crew members without any casualties or injuries.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Navy for the successful execution of the complex operation, which underscores India's growing capability and commitment to maritime security in the region.
