Veteran South African jurist Navanethem "Navi" Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She is recognized for decades of upholding international law, defending human rights, and securing justice for victims globally, overcoming apartheid-era legal structures.

OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced that veteran South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay is the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Pillay, a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, was honored for her decades-long dedication to upholding international law, defending fundamental human rights, and securing justice for victims of systemic violence and armed conflict worldwide.

A Career Defined by Justice and Accountability

Pillay emerged as the laureate from an extensive field of 287 nominated individuals and organizations. Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes cited her career, which has been defined by breakthrough legal precedents and an unyielding commitment to accountability across the globe.

Born in Durban, South Africa, to an Indian Tamil family, Pillay navigated the oppressive legal structures of apartheid. Her early career saw her become the first non-white woman to establish a law practice in Natal Province. During the apartheid era, she routinely defended political dissidents, anti-apartheid activists, and trade union leaders, confronting systemic state repression directly from inside the courtroom.

Breaking Barriers and Championing Human Rights

Her work transcended South Africa's borders, leading to significant roles on the international stage. Pillay served as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and later on the International Criminal Court, where she continued her pursuit of justice for victims of grave human rights abuses.

The Nobel Committee highlighted her consistent efforts to ensure that perpetrators of violence and human rights violations are held accountable, regardless of their position or power. Her legacy includes advocating for the rights of marginalized communities and tirelessly working towards a more just and equitable world through the framework of international law.
