Kolkata, India – Chandra Kumar Bose, the grandnephew of iconic freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, has announced his resignation from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). His departure, effective immediately, was attributed to “personal reasons” in a brief letter submitted to the party leadership on August 3, 2026.
A Shifting Political Journey
Bose's exit concludes a relatively short association with the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. He had joined the party ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, following a public statement where he described his previous decision to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a “mistake.”
His political career began in 2016 when he formally joined the BJP. During his time with the saffron party, Bose contested both the 2016 West Bengal Assembly election and the 2019 Lok Sabha election. He was also appointed the BJP’s West Bengal vice-president in 2019, though he was later dropped from the post during an organizational reshuffle in 2020.
Reasons for Resignation
In 2023, Bose resigned from the BJP, alleging that the party had failed to uphold Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's inclusive nationalist ideology. Before switching to the TMC, he emphasized his desire to pursue a more inclusive political approach, which he felt was not possible within the BJP.
While his resignation letter from the TMC cites only “personal reasons,” his recent political trajectory suggests a search for a platform that aligns with his interpretation of Netaji's principles. Chandra Kumar Bose is the son of former MP Amiya Nath Bose and the grandson of Sarat Chandra Bose, Netaji's elder brother.
Beyond Politics
Before entering active politics, Chandra Kumar Bose had a distinguished career in the corporate sector, spending 18 years with Tata Steel, where he rose to the position of Area Sales Manager. An economics graduate from Hendon College, London, and an alumnus of IIM Calcutta, he also founded Bose Information Technology Pvt Ltd, an HR consultancy and skill development firm.
His departure from the TMC adds another chapter to his dynamic political journey, leaving observers to speculate on his future endeavors.
