Political strategist Prashant Kishor has secured his first electoral victory, winning the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar. This significant win for his Jan Suraaj Party not only marks a breakthrough for Kishor but also delivers an unexpected blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had held the Bankipur constituency since 1995.
Kishor's Triumph in Bankipur
Kishor is projected to defeat BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes. The bypoll results show the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate, Rekha Gupta, slipping to a distant third place. For Kishor, who founded the Jan Suraaj Party, this victory is a crucial milestone, providing the political momentum he has been seeking after his party contested all 243 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections without winning any.
BJP's Symbolic Setback
While the immediate impact of the Bankipur loss is on the BJP, it is largely considered a symbolic setback rather than an existential threat. The BJP remains the dominant political force in Bihar, having achieved a sweeping performance in the 2025 Assembly elections. In that election, the BJP secured approximately 63 percent of the vote in Bankipur, while the RJD garnered 29.55 percent, highlighting the shift in voter preference in this bypoll.
Tejashwi Yadav and RJD Face Deeper Challenge
The longer-term political implications of Kishor's emergence are more serious for Tejashwi Yadav and the RJD. The bypoll saw the RJD pushed to third place, a stark contrast to its second-place finish in the 2025 Assembly election. This suggests that Kishor's Jan Suraaj is beginning to occupy the political space traditionally claimed by the RJD as the principal challenger to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
If Jan Suraaj continues to attract anti-BJP voters, it could fragment the opposition vote, potentially making Kishor, rather than the RJD, the preferred alternative to the NDA. This scenario could significantly complicate the RJD's path back to power, a goal the party has pursued for nearly two decades.
The RJD's Long Wait for Power
The RJD's last uninterrupted stint in power in Bihar ended in 2005. Although Tejashwi Yadav served as Deputy Chief Minister in the Mahagathbandhan government between August 2022 and January 2024, the Chief Minister's post remained with Nitish Kumar. In the 2020 Assembly election, the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan came close, winning 110 seats, just 12 short of a majority.
However, the 2025 Assembly elections saw a significant reversal, with the BJP-led NDA sweeping to power with 202 seats. The Mahagathbandhan was reduced to just 35 seats, and the RJD's tally dropped from 75 seats in 2020 to 25. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats, followed by the JD(U) with 85.
Against this backdrop, Kishor's growing influence risks dividing the opposition space further. If Jan Suraaj consolidates anti-NDA votes without ultimately defeating the ruling alliance statewide, it could prolong Tejashwi Yadav's aspirations for the Chief Minister's office.
