In a significant political development, seven out of nine Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction are reportedly preparing to defect. This potential exodus could see them join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, dealing a considerable blow to Uddhav Thackeray's political standing.
MPs Arrive in Delhi Amid Defection Rumors
Reports indicate that two rebel MPs, Bhausaheb Wakchaure from Shirdi and Sanjay Deshmukh from Yavatmal, have already arrived in Delhi. The remaining five MPs are expected to reach the capital shortly. The full list of UBT MPs reportedly considering defection includes Arvind Sawant, Sanjay Jadhav, Sanjay Patil, Nagesh Bapurao Ashtikar, and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, alongside Wakchaure and Deshmukh.
Sources suggest that these seven MPs plan to form a distinct group before eventually merging with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. This strategic move is anticipated to occur before June 19, which marks the 60th foundation day of the Shiv Sena, adding symbolic weight to the political maneuver.
"Operation Tiger" and Political Realignments
The alleged defections align with recent discussions in Maharashtra politics concerning an "Operation Tiger," a rumored effort to draw more legislators into the Shinde faction. While Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had previously dismissed such claims, stating that the "number game" was over after the elections, the current developments suggest a renewed push for political realignment.
Anil Desai and Sanjay Raut, prominent figures within the Shiv Sena (UBT), are reportedly in Delhi attempting to prevent the split and consolidate support for Uddhav Thackeray. The Shiv Sena (UBT), which contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, secured nine seats in Maharashtra. The Shinde faction currently holds seven Lok Sabha seats, positioning itself as the BJP's third-largest ally at the Centre.
If these defections materialize, it would significantly alter the political landscape in Maharashtra and further weaken Uddhav Thackeray's influence within the state's complex political arena.
