President Donald Trump officially unveiled a newly refurbished Boeing 747-8i aircraft at Joint Base Andrews on Saturday, confirming it will serve as the temporary Air Force One starting next month. The sophisticated jet, a gift from Qatar, is set to begin presidential transport after its final commissioning flights.
The aircraft showcases a striking new livery of red, white, and navy blue, a departure from the iconic robin’s egg light blue that has characterized presidential planes for nearly four decades. President Trump expressed his preference for the new design, stating, "These are the new colours – red, white and blue. We liked the baby blue, but it was time for a change. I like the colour of the American flag."
A Temporary Solution Amidst Delays
Trump highlighted the significant upgrade in size, noting, "It's like virtually double the size" compared to previous models. This acquisition comes after President Trump voiced frustrations over delays in Boeing's ongoing Air Force One replacement program, which is not expected to deliver the new VC-25B presidential aircraft until around 2028.
"I asked the Emir if we could use the brand new 747," Trump recounted, explaining that the Qatari aircraft had logged relatively few flight hours. The US Air Force confirmed that the jet underwent extensive modifications to meet stringent security and operational requirements for presidential transport, emphasizing a disciplined engineering process.
Upcoming Presidential Engagements
The new bridge aircraft is anticipated to participate in a flyover during America's 250th Independence Day celebrations on July 4. Additionally, it is expected to transport the President for his visit to the NATO summit in Turkey next month. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach noted that this temporary addition would alleviate pressure on the aging presidential fleet and ensure continuous presidential airlift operations until the permanent replacement enters service.
