US and Iran Agree to 60-Day Peace Roadmap
After days of intense negotiations, the United States and Iran have concluded their first round of formal talks in Switzerland, agreeing on a 60-day roadmap toward a final peace deal. The agreement, reached in the early hours of Monday, was announced by mediators Pakistan and Qatar, with Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirming the outcome.
Key Pillars of the Agreement
The newly established framework includes several parallel structures designed to maintain momentum and prevent a breakdown in the process. A crucial component is the creation of a de-confliction cell involving Lebanon, aimed at halting military operations in the region. This addresses one of Tehran's core demands throughout the negotiating process.
A high-level committee will be formed to provide oversight for the mediation, with chief negotiators from both the US and Iran reporting to it regularly. This committee's primary objective is to work towards a comprehensive final deal within the 60-day timeframe, while also preparing for the immediate initiation of technical negotiations.
Furthermore, a direct communication line has been established between Washington and Tehran. This line is specifically designed to prevent incidents and miscommunication that could jeopardize the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to mitigate the maritime flashpoints that have recently destabilized the ceasefire.
Both sides have also committed to ensuring adherence to the termination of military operations in Lebanon, as outlined in the memorandum of understanding.
Tense Negotiations Preceded Breakthrough
The Switzerland negotiations, initially scheduled to begin on Friday, faced significant delays. Iran was initially absent, citing ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon. The situation escalated when Iran responded by briefly shutting the Strait of Hormuz, prompting US President Donald Trump to issue threats of fresh strikes on Tehran if Hezbollah operations continued.
Talks eventually commenced on Sunday, but tensions persisted. Iranian officials declined to participate in a planned photo opportunity with their American counterparts and, at one point, walked out of the venue. Throughout the discussions, the situation in Lebanon remained a significant sticking point, with Tehran consistently making the cessation of Israeli military operations a condition for progress, even as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah continued despite an earlier ceasefire agreement.
