The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is collaborating with the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), India’s wealthiest Hindu temple trust, to significantly modernize its financial operations. This comprehensive project focuses on updating the TTD's accounting manual, which has been in use for over three decades, and advising on key financial assets.
Modernizing TTD's Accounting Framework
An ICAI official confirmed that the institute is actively working with TTD to revise and update its accounting manual. This initiative aims to align TTD's financial practices with current accounting standards and global best practices, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency.
Strategic Advice on Gold and Real Estate Assets
Given TTD's extensive land holdings, real estate, and significant gold reserves, the ICAI is also providing strategic counsel on these valuable assets. The advisory includes exploring the potential for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to manage and potentially leverage TTD's vast property portfolio. Additionally, the ICAI is developing a robust methodology for the accurate valuation and verification of the trust's considerable gold holdings.
ERP Integration and 100-Day Timeline
A core objective of this collaboration is to integrate ERP-based accounting processes across all institutions operating under TTD. This move is expected to introduce uniformity and substantially strengthen financial management systems. ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D previously highlighted the institute's commitment to this review and update, with the ICAI Accounting Research Foundation (ICAI ARF) undertaking a detailed research study to develop a strong framework for accounting and audit systems. The entire project is slated for completion within a challenging 100-day timeline.
A Model for Other Trusts?
While the refined policy manual developed for TTD could potentially serve as a blueprint for other religious and charitable entities with similar operational scales, an ICAI official clarified that the Ayodhya Ram Temple Trust has not yet approached the institute for comparable advisory services.
