Kolkata's fire safety crackdown has led to temporary closure notices for 919 hotels and guest houses across the city. These establishments were found to be non-compliant with mandatory fire safety regulations following extensive joint inspections.
The state fire services department, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), and Kolkata Police spearheaded the inspection drive. Out of 960 establishments scrutinized so far, a mere 41 were found to meet the prescribed fire safety requirements, highlighting a widespread issue of non-compliance.
Inspections Intensified After Deadly Blaze
This intensified inspection campaign was initiated in the wake of a tragic fire on August 19 at Shikha Inn, a guest house located on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata. The devastating blaze claimed the lives of nine individuals, including seven Bangladeshi nationals.
Officials have stated that all establishments served with closure notices must first upgrade their fire safety arrangements to meet current norms. They are also required to obtain a Renewal of Fire Safety Certificate (RFSC) before they can reapply for licenses to resume operations.
Ongoing City-Wide Audit
The joint inspection teams have currently covered approximately 960 hotels and guest houses, representing about one-fourth of the estimated 3,700 such establishments operating within Kolkata. Authorities confirm that inspections will continue throughout the city until all remaining hotels and guest houses have been assessed for compliance.
The high number of violations underscores significant concerns regarding public safety in hospitality venues across Kolkata, with officials emphasizing that adherence to mandatory safety requirements is paramount for reopening.
