The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) saw a robust market debut on Thursday, with its shares climbing more than 5% above their issue price. This strong performance added approximately ₹22,000 crore to the exchange's market capitalization, signaling significant investor confidence.
NSE's Strong Debut Performance
The shares of India's largest stock exchange were listed following an initial public offering (IPO) conducted as an offer-for-sale (OFS) by existing shareholders. Upon listing, NSE shares opened at ₹1,800, a modest premium of 0.84% over the IPO price of ₹1,785.
However, trading quickly gained momentum, with the stock reaching a day's high of ₹1,878 on the BSE, marking a 5.21% increase from its issue price. At this peak, NSE's market capitalization stood at around ₹4.64 lakh crore, a substantial rise from the estimated ₹4.42 lakh crore based on its IPO valuation.
Expert Views on NSE's Long-Term Potential
Market analysts have offered optimistic views on NSE's future prospects. Deven Choksey, Managing Director of DRChoksey Finserv, highlighted the unique nature of the exchange business, calling NSE a "deep value" investment.
"The long-term investment in this case is, I think, a deep value investment largely because the exchange business is exclusive. It's not a common business. Not everybody can come into the exchange business," Choksey stated.
He further emphasized the benefits of liquidity for established exchanges and the potential for new product development. Choksey advised investors who missed the IPO allotment to consider a systematic investment approach with a long-term horizon of three to five years, viewing the stock as a "shock absorber" in a volatile market.
Echoing a similar sentiment, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, suggested that if NSE shares become available at a fair price in the current trading environment, it would present an excellent opportunity for long-term investors to acquire a blue-chip stock for their portfolios.
The positive reception for NSE shares underscores the market's belief in the exchange's foundational strength and its pivotal role in India's growing financial landscape, with projections of India's market capitalization potentially tripling in the coming decade.
