The Government of Odisha has announced an ambitious target: to power 74% of its energy needs from non-fossil fuel sources by 2047. This move signals a significant acceleration in the state's investment in renewable energy, grid infrastructure, and advanced energy storage solutions, aiming to meet future demand growth sustainably.
Ambitious Clean Energy Goals
Speaking at a recent industry event, Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy), Government of Odisha, outlined the state's strategic vision. Odisha intends to steadily increase the share of clean energy in its overall power mix, with an interim goal of achieving a 52:48 split between non-fossil and fossil fuel-based infrastructure.
The state has identified vast renewable energy opportunities crucial for its long-term energy transition strategy. This includes an estimated 50 GW of floating solar potential and nearly 30 GW of pumped storage capacity. Dev highlighted Odisha's strong foundation for this shift, citing its abundant natural resources and robust fiscal position, noting the state's surplus in revenue, power, and water.
Investing in Infrastructure and Innovation
To underpin this massive transition, Odisha is channeling a substantial portion of its revenue surplus—approximately ₹33,000 crore—into infrastructure creation and capital expenditure. Already, investments totaling ₹16,000 crore have been approved for modernizing and strengthening the state's transmission networks, which are vital for integrating new renewable sources.
Odisha is also actively exploring innovative solutions to manage the intermittency inherent in renewable power generation. Dev mentioned Agri-PV, a system integrating solar power generation with agricultural activities, as a potential method to bridge emerging power storage gaps as renewable energy deployment expands.
The state has already deployed around 1,000 MW of floating solar projects and plans to scale up this capacity significantly in the coming years. Major renewable energy developers, including Tata Power and ACME Solar, have shown keen interest and are establishing projects within the region.
Odisha's Role in India's Energy Future
With its large untapped renewable resources, ongoing transmission upgrades, and a growing pipeline of clean energy projects, Odisha is positioning itself as a key player in India's broader energy transition. The state aims to meet its rising industrial and economic demand through low-carbon sources, contributing significantly to national sustainability goals.
