Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles and Iveco Group are embarking on a strategic partnership to bring a selection of Iveco products to the Indian market. The collaboration will prioritize localization, with semi-knocked-down (SKD) manufacturing serving as the initial phase for these operations.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, Tata Motors, and Iveco Group, announced the initiative at a global press conference in Turin, Italy. He emphasized that both companies are actively identifying specific Iveco products that hold significant relevance for the Indian commercial vehicle sector.
Localisation and Mutual Growth Opportunities
Chandrasekaran highlighted the strong complementarity between the product portfolios of Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles and Iveco Group. He stated, “There is a huge opportunity for Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles and Iveco Group to work together... There are specific products of Iveco Group which will have a lot of relevance in India. We are already identifying those products.”
The localization efforts in India are crucial for making these products viable in the market. Beyond Indian market entry for Iveco, the partnership is a two-way street. Tata Motors' platforms and products will also be evaluated for potential deployment in other global markets where Iveco Group has a strong presence. Opportunities in components, batteries, and other areas are also being explored.
A Global Commercial Vehicle Powerhouse
The combined business operations of Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles and Iveco Group are projected to achieve an annual production of approximately 600,000 vehicles, generating revenues around $24 billion. This strategic alliance positions the combined entity as the fourth-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer globally in the segment for trucks weighing over six tonnes.
This formidable combination leverages Tata Motors' dominant position in India and Iveco's established footprint across Europe and Latin America. It aims to unlock substantial growth opportunities across diverse markets and product segments, including trucks, buses, and specialized vehicles for mining and construction.
Collectively, the enterprise will operate 27 manufacturing facilities, 25 research and development centers, and an expansive network of over 9,300 sales and service centers. Supported by a workforce exceeding 73,000 employees across six continents, the partnership provides greater scale to compete effectively in the global commercial vehicle landscape.
