RBI's FCNR Window: Digital Onboarding Key for Banks to Win NRI Customers

· · 3 min read

The RBI's special FCNR(B) deposit window offers attractive interest rates to NRIs until September 2026. Banks must prioritize seamless digital onboarding and robust KYC to convert this opportunity into lasting relationships, as NRI deposits surged 43% in 2024.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has opened a special Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) or FCNR(B) deposit window, presenting a significant opportunity for Indian banks to attract funds from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). This facility, available until September 30, 2026, allows banks to offer NRIs competitive interest rates, typically ranging from 5.5% to 7%, on dollar-denominated deposits. The RBI is also absorbing the associated hedging costs, making these deposits even more appealing to both banks and overseas Indians.

This initiative comes at a time when NRI deposit flows have already shown robust growth, with a 43% increase to $13.33 billion in 2024. This surge indicates a strong and growing appetite among NRIs for Indian banking products. However, while attractive interest rates are a crucial draw, converting this short-term interest into long-term customer relationships hinges on more than just pricing.

Digital Onboarding: The New Competitive Edge

The increased volume of NRI applications brings with it a substantial operational burden for banks. Each applicant requires thorough identity verification, document validation, regulatory screening, and risk assessment before an account can be activated. Traditional, manual processes can be slow, inefficient, and prone to errors, directly impacting customer experience and compliance.

Prasad Patil, CTO & Chief - Business Operations at Mobicule Technologies, highlights the critical need for banks to standardize and streamline their onboarding processes through advanced digital Know Your Customer (KYC) and document intelligence solutions. He notes that industry-wide adoption of AI in KYC and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) processes has significantly risen, from 42% in 2024 to 82% in 2025, though much of this adoption remains partial. Automated verification can drastically cut processing times, reducing them by approximately 78% compared to manual reviews, with some institutions reporting up to a 60% reduction in overall KYC and AML review durations.

Enhancing Customer Experience Beyond Rates

Beyond the efficiency gains, digital onboarding directly impacts customer satisfaction and retention. Fenergo research indicates that a staggering 70% of financial institutions lost clients in 2025 due to slow onboarding, a significant jump from 48% in 2023. For overseas customers, who often complete these processes remotely, delays in document verification or inconsistent approval procedures can severely damage their perception of the bank.

While speed is important—UK corporate banks, for instance, average over six weeks for onboarding, compared to faster processes in Singapore—it's not the sole factor. Integrating compliance directly into digital onboarding workflows allows banks to swiftly process routine applications while flagging complex cases for human review by compliance teams. This balanced approach ensures both efficiency and regulatory adherence.

Automation for Scale and Compliance

Patil emphasizes that automated document verification, sophisticated workflow orchestration, and real-time application tracking are essential for banks to manage larger NRI volumes effectively while maintaining stringent regulatory controls. As the RBI's FCNR window continues to attract deposits through September 2026, the ability of banks to combine competitive offerings with efficient, compliant digital onboarding for NRI customers will be the decisive factor in converting short-term deposit interest into enduring banking relationships.
