SBI Card Introduces 1% Processing Fee on Transport Over Rs 3,000, Fuel Over Rs 5,000

· · 2 min read

SBI Card has implemented a 1% processing fee on credit card transactions for transport payments exceeding Rs 3,000 and fuel purchases over Rs 5,000, effective December 1, 2023. This new charge impacts a broad range of everyday expenses for cardholders.

SBI Card, a major credit card issuer in India, has introduced a new 1% processing fee on certain high-value transactions made using its credit cards. The changes, which came into effect on December 1, 2023, primarily impact transport-related payments and fuel purchases, affecting a significant portion of its customer base.

New Fees for Transport and Fuel Transactions

Under the revised policy, SBI Cardholders will now incur a 1% processing fee on transport-related payments that exceed Rs 3,000 per transaction. This fee applies to various modes of transportation, including:

  • Bus travel
  • Train tickets
  • Taxi services
  • Metro fares
  • Other public transport bookings

Similarly, a 1% processing fee will be levied on fuel transactions made via SBI credit cards when the single transaction amount surpasses Rs 5,000. This charge is in addition to any existing surcharges or taxes. For both categories, the fee is calculated on the total transaction value, not just the amount exceeding the threshold.

Impact on Cardholders

The introduction of these processing fees marks a notable change for SBI Card users, particularly those who frequently use their credit cards for commuting or vehicle refueling. While individual transactions below the specified thresholds remain unaffected, larger payments will now carry an additional cost.

For instance, a transport payment of Rs 3,500 would incur an additional Rs 35 fee, while a fuel purchase of Rs 6,000 would result in a Rs 60 fee. This move by SBI Card aligns with a broader trend among financial institutions to revise fee structures in response to operational costs and market dynamics.

Understanding the Change

Customers are advised to review their spending habits and consider the implications of these new fees. While the charges are relatively small on individual transactions, they can accumulate over time for frequent high-value users. SBI Card communicated these changes to its customers through various channels prior to the effective date.

Cardholders seeking more detailed information regarding specific transaction types or exemptions are encouraged to visit the official SBI Card website or contact customer service.
