In a significant revelation, Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal recently recounted the pivotal role played by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in enabling Vedanta Resources to become the first Indian company to list on the London Stock Exchange (LSE).
A Vision for Global Valuation
Agarwal shared that a memorable day in his career was December 10, 2003. At the time, he felt that Indian businesses were not achieving the valuation and growth they deserved on domestic exchanges. This conviction led him to decide on listing Vedanta on the London Stock Exchange, aiming for greater international recognition and capital access.
However, this ambition faced a significant regulatory hurdle. India's foreign exchange and cross-border listing regulations were stringent. The London Stock Exchange required just one crucial document from India: a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Government of India.
The Prime Ministerial Intervention
Determined, Agarwal traveled to Delhi, meeting numerous government officials to present his case. His efforts eventually led to an opportunity to meet with then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Recalling the meeting, Agarwal stated that Vajpayee listened patiently to his proposal. After hearing him out, the Prime Minister turned to his Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, and remarked, "The boy seems alright. We should help him; foreign exchange will come into the country."
This simple yet powerful endorsement from the highest office cleared the path. Armed with the government's NOC, Agarwal returned to London, where the listing proceeded.
Making History on the LSE
Vedanta subsequently made history, becoming the inaugural Indian company to list on the London Stock Exchange. The company later secured a coveted position in the prestigious FTSE 100 index, marking a significant milestone for Indian corporate presence on the global financial stage.
Agarwal described this achievement as a "first and unforgettable experience," emphasizing the impact of Vajpayee's vision and support. He concluded his reflection with a popular Hindi verse:
- "Kaun kehta hai aasman me chhed nahi ho sakta, ek patthar to tabiyat se uchhale yaaro"
- (Who says there can't be any hole in the sky, Just throw a stone with flair, my friends).
Vajpayee's leadership, which included completing a full five-year term from 1999 to 2004, proved instrumental in fostering an environment conducive to such pioneering international ventures.
