Veteran aviation executive Willie Walsh officially assumed the role of CEO at IndiGo on Monday, taking the helm of India's largest airline by market share. Walsh's mandate includes propelling IndiGo's global growth trajectory, enhancing operational excellence, and fortifying its network and commercial strategy.
Strategic Priorities and Challenges Ahead
Walsh joins IndiGo at a pivotal moment, as the airline concludes two decades of operations and navigates a complex environment marked by geopolitical tensions and mounting financial pressures. The airline recently ceased its widebody operations due to significant losses, posting a net loss of Rs 237.6 crore in Q1FY27 despite a 19% year-on-year revenue increase. High fuel costs and a depreciating rupee have notably impacted profitability.
Known in the industry as “Slasher” Walsh for his rigorous cost-cutting measures during his tenures at Aer Lingus and British Airways, he is expected to apply similar strategies while ensuring IndiGo maintains its core identity as a low-cost, single-aisle carrier. A key focus will be consolidating the domestic market while aggressively expanding into international geographies.
Advocating for Aviation Policy Reforms
Walsh has been a vocal critic of Indian aviation policy, consistently calling for reforms to unlock the sector's full potential. As the former Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), he previously urged India to open its bilateral flying rights, which have been largely static since 2016. He emphasized that Indian carriers, with their substantial wide-body aircraft orders, require reciprocal flying rights to expand globally.
Furthermore, Walsh has highlighted the tax-related challenges faced by foreign airlines in India, advocating for greater clarity on tax law application to foster investment and growth within the sector. While acknowledging the necessity of taxation, he stresses the importance of transparent and predictable regulatory frameworks.
Navigating Operational Headwinds
The new CEO steps in after a period of significant operational turbulence for IndiGo. In December 2025, the airline experienced widespread disruptions, impacting over 900,000 passengers, following the implementation of new, more restrictive flight duty time limitations (FDTL) for pilots in India. Walsh, while acknowledging the stricter FDTL compared to other jurisdictions, underscored their importance for aviation safety.
The fallout from these disruptions led to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposing a Rs 22 crore fine on IndiGo and a 10% cut in its winter schedule. This period also saw the departure of previous CEO Pieter Elbers in March.
Willie Walsh's Extensive Aviation Career
Walsh's career spans decades of leadership in the global aviation industry. He began as a pilot at Aer Lingus, rising to become its CEO in 2001. His subsequent roles include CEO of British Airways (2005–2011), CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG) (2011–2020), and most recently, Director General of IATA. His pragmatic and resolute management style is well-regarded across the industry for successfully navigating airlines through periods of growth, transformation, and complex operating environments.
