The Recording Academy is implementing a substantial overhaul for the 2027 Grammy Awards, introducing five new categories and modifying several key eligibility requirements. These changes, set to take effect for the ceremony scheduled for February 7, 2027, are designed to reflect the evolving music industry and broaden the awards' reach.
New Categories Expand Genre Recognition
Among the most notable additions are five new categories, enhancing representation across various musical styles and global markets:
- Best Asian Pop Music Performance: This category will celebrate excellence in Asian pop from artists connected to Asian music markets, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, with a focus on meaningful use of Asian languages.
- Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance: This new award will honor contemporary R&B performances by groups, duos, and collaborations between solo artists. Following this addition, the existing Best R&B Performance category will be renamed Best R&B Solo Performance.
- Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance: Recognising songs and performances that fall outside contemporary pop music forms.
- Best Traditional Folk Album: This category will honor traditional folk recordings. Consequently, the existing Best Folk Album category will be renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.
- Best Latin Song: This award will acknowledge the songwriters behind newly written Latin songs, predominantly in Spanish, with at least 51% of the lyrics in the language.
Key Eligibility Rules Revised
Significant adjustments have also been made to the eligibility criteria for some of the most prominent Grammy categories:
- Best New Artist: Artists can now be submitted for this highly coveted award up to four times, an increase from the previous limit of three submissions. This change aims to better accommodate the varied career trajectories of emerging artists.
- Album of the Year: The minimum requirement for new recordings on an eligible album has been lowered from 75% to 66%. This adjustment allows more albums, particularly those that incorporate remixes or live versions of previously released tracks alongside substantial new material, to qualify for consideration.
Voting Process Updates
The Grammys are also introducing "Ballot Plus," an optional voting system designed to empower eligible voting members with expertise across multiple genres. This system will allow these members to vote in up to 15 peer-related categories, complementing the existing 10/3 voting structure. Members opting for Ballot Plus must verify their professional credits to gain access, while others will continue with the standard voting process. The Recording Academy states these changes are part of an ongoing effort to make the awards process more inclusive and responsive to the dynamic music landscape.
