Changing Your WhatsApp Number? Essential Steps to Preserve Chat History

· · 3 min read

Switching your WhatsApp number requires specific steps to ensure your chat history remains accessible. Learn how to prepare your account and perform the change correctly to avoid losing data.

Planning to change your phone number and want to keep your WhatsApp account and chat history intact? While WhatsApp offers a dedicated 'Change Phone Number' feature, simply switching your SIM card isn't enough. It's crucial to follow specific requirements and backup procedures to prevent losing access to your valuable conversations.

Key Checks Before You Begin

Before initiating the number change, ensure your new phone number meets WhatsApp's criteria and that your current setup is ready:

  • New Number Activation: Verify that your new number is active and capable of receiving calls or SMS messages. WhatsApp uses these for verification.
  • Old Number Registration: Confirm your old number is currently registered and active on WhatsApp. You can check this by navigating to WhatsApp's Settings > your profile picture.
  • Unsupported Number Types: WhatsApp does not support VoIP, toll-free, paid premium, Universal Access Number (UAN), or personal landline numbers for registration (landlines are only supported on the WhatsApp Business app).
  • Device Requirement: The number change must be performed on your primary phone. It cannot be done through WhatsApp Web or Desktop applications.

What Happens After the Switch?

Understanding the implications of a number change can help manage expectations:

  • Blocked Contacts: Any contacts you have previously blocked will remain blocked on your new number. They will not be notified of your number change.
  • Group Notifications: All group chats you are a part of will automatically receive a notification about your number change, even if you don't enable 'Notify Contacts'.

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Your WhatsApp Number

On Your Current Phone

If you're keeping your existing phone but changing the number, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the SIM card with your new phone number into your current phone.
  2. Open WhatsApp.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu (Android) or Settings (iOS).
  4. Go to Settings > Account > Change number, then tap Next.
  5. Enter your old phone number in the first field and your new phone number in the second field, both in full international format. Tap Next.
  6. Choose whether you want to notify all contacts, contacts you have chatted with, or selected contacts. Tap Done.
  7. Complete the process by registering your new number, which usually involves an SMS verification.

Moving to a New Phone Simultaneously

If you are also getting a new phone, the order of operations is critical to preserve your chat history:

  1. First, perform the number change on your old phone using the steps outlined above.
  2. Once the number is changed on your old phone, create a new Google Drive backup (for Android) or iCloud backup (for iOS) that is now associated with your new number. This is crucial because cloud backups are linked to the number used when they were created.
  3. Install WhatsApp on your new phone.
  4. Register your new number on the new phone.
  5. During setup, restore the backup you created with your new number. An old-number backup cannot be used to restore data after the number change.

By following these essential steps, you can smoothly transition to a new WhatsApp number without the frustration of losing your valuable chat history.
