Indian MSMEs Prioritize Efficiency Over Growth, CMR Study Finds

· · 2 min read

A new CyberMedia Research (CMR) study reveals 78% of Indian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) now prioritize operational efficiency over expansion. This shift addresses cost pressures and technology gaps in an uncertain business climate.

A new study by CyberMedia Research (CMR) indicates a significant strategic shift among Indian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The research reveals that a substantial 78% of these businesses are now prioritizing operational efficiency over aggressive expansion, marking a pivotal change in their growth approach.

This reorientation comes as MSMEs grapple with persistent cost pressures, evolving technology requirements, and an unpredictable business landscape. While revenue growth (71%) and customer acquisition (64%) remain important, they have taken a backseat to optimizing internal processes.

Focus on Resilience and Productivity

Prabhu Ram, Vice President of the Industry Research Group at CyberMedia Research, noted that operational efficiency has clearly surpassed traditional expansion metrics as the primary focus. He stated this signals a move toward a more mature and resilient phase of growth. "MSMEs are placing greater emphasis on productivity, resource optimization, and building long-term competitiveness in an uncertain environment," Ram added.

The study highlights that digital transformation and cost optimization are increasingly intertwined strategies. Approximately 58% of surveyed MSMEs identified digital transformation as a key priority, closely followed by 57% who focused on cost optimization. Artificial intelligence (AI) adoption is also gaining traction, with 55% of MSMEs exploring AI to support their next phase of digital evolution.

Balancing Innovation with Risk Management

Alongside technological advancements, MSMEs are also bolstering their defenses, with 52% strengthening cybersecurity preparedness. This demonstrates a balanced approach, where businesses integrate innovation with a keen awareness of operational risks.

Key Challenges in Tech Adoption

Despite the clear strategic intent, implementing new technologies presents various hurdles for MSMEs. Budgetary constraints, a shortage of skilled personnel, and ongoing cybersecurity concerns are significant inhibitors. Furthermore, many businesses struggle to identify and select the most appropriate technology solutions for their specific needs.

Sugandha Srivastava, Senior Analyst at CMR's Industry Consulting Group, pointed out the execution-level challenges. "Shortages in internal digital skills and difficulty identifying the right technology fit remain key constraints," Srivastava explained. The survey found that 26% of MSMEs cited a lack of internal digital expertise, while 20% struggled to pinpoint the correct technology solutions. Another 6% highlighted the absence of reliable advisory support.

These findings underscore the critical need for structured advisory assistance to help MSMEs bridge the gap between strategic planning and successful technology implementation, ensuring they can effectively achieve their operational efficiency goals.
