India's Vyommitra AI Half-Humanoid Prepares for Historic Uncrewed Space Mission

India is preparing its AI-powered half-humanoid, Vyommitra, for an uncrewed experimental space mission in late 2026. This flight will validate critical technologies for India's upcoming human spaceflight program.

India is charting a new course in space exploration with its AI-powered half-humanoid robot, Vyommitra, poised for a historic uncrewed experimental space mission. Scheduled for the final quarter of 2026, this pioneering flight is a crucial precursor to India's ambitious human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan.

Vyommitra's Mission: Validating Critical Technologies

Vyommitra, whose name means "space friend" in Sanskrit, is designed to mimic human functions and interact with life support systems. The upcoming mission will serve as a vital testbed for various technologies under development for the first time. The data collected from Vyommitra's performance will be instrumental in ensuring the safety and success of future crewed missions.

Following this initial flight, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans two more uncrewed missions by 2027. These subsequent flights will feature configurations identical to the first crewed mission, further refining systems and procedures before human astronauts are launched into space.

Gaganyaan and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station

The Vyommitra mission is an integral part of India's broader space strategy, which includes the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program and the development of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS). The operationalization of BAS is targeted for 2035, with ISRO already progressing on the overall configuration, which will comprise five modules. The government has approved the development and launch of the first module, BAS-01, with system engineering and technology development activities actively underway across ISRO centers.

To support these grand endeavors, the Union Cabinet approved a substantial budgetary allocation of Rs 20,193 crore in September 2024, earmarked for the accomplishment of eight key missions.

International Collaboration for Space Success

India is not undertaking this journey alone, actively collaborating with several international space agencies to leverage global expertise and resources:

  • European Space Agency (ESA): Providing essential network operations support for the Gaganyaan missions.
  • Australian Space Agency (ASA): Partnering on crew and crew module recovery efforts for Gaganyaan.
  • French National Space Agency (CNES): Facilitating the training of ISRO's flight surgeons and ground support teams at CNES/European facilities.
  • Roscosmos (Russia): A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos has enabled contracts for critical subsystems like crew seats, viewports, and flight suits. This collaboration also includes wind tunnel testing and generic space flight training for the first batch of Gaganyatris at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre.

These partnerships underscore the collaborative spirit of modern space exploration, bringing India closer to its aspirations of independent human spaceflight and a permanent presence in orbit.
