Reliance Intelligence, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is developing a large-scale sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The ambitious project, announced by Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani, aims to commission its first 120 MW phase by the end of 2026.
Establishing India's AI Independence
Speaking at Reliance Industries’ 49th annual general meeting, Ambani highlighted that this initiative is crucial for India’s digital future. The sovereign AI backbone is designed to offer secure, in-country AI hosting, ensuring full model transparency and portability for enterprises. This means businesses operating within India will retain complete ownership and control over their AI models while leveraging advanced domestic infrastructure.
The project forms a core component of Reliance Industries’ broader strategy to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem, encompassing computing infrastructure, cloud hosting services, AI models, and consumer-facing applications.
Powering AI with Advanced Hardware and Partnerships
To support this massive undertaking, Reliance Intelligence is operationalizing an initial fleet of Nvidia’s advanced GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs). These powerful chips are essential for handling the intensive computational demands associated with training and running complex large AI models.
Beyond hardware, Reliance is deepening its strategic partnership with Google. This collaboration, described by Ambani as an “AI-first” endeavor, aims to extend generative AI services to Jio’s vast subscriber base. Google AI Pro, powered by Gemini, is already being offered to Jio users free of cost, demonstrating the immediate impact of this alliance.
Furthermore, the company is actively developing AI tools and services specifically tailored for Indian languages. This focus is intended to democratize access to AI technology, making it more relevant and accessible to a broader population beyond English-speaking users across the country.
A National Priority: AI for India
Akash Ambani articulated a powerful vision: “What we are building is AI for India, AI by India, and AI that will one day serve the world.” He also noted Reliance Intelligence’s long-term objective to significantly reduce the cost of artificial intelligence, making it affordable and scalable by the end of the decade.
Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani reinforced the strategic importance of AI self-sufficiency for India. He emphasized that this should be treated as a national priority, alongside critical areas like energy security and access to essential technologies and minerals. “India should not be a mere consumer of AI created elsewhere. It must become a creator, adopter, and a global leader in AI,” Mukesh Ambani stated, underscoring the transformative potential of this indigenous AI development.
