At Reliance Industries Ltd.'s (RIL) 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Executive Director Anant Ambani announced significant progress on the company's ambitious renewable energy hub in Gujarat's arid Kutch region. This massive project is designed to produce over 40 billion units of green electricity annually, which is projected to fulfill about 3% of India's current power requirements.
The Kutch Renewable Energy Hub
The Kutch hub spans an impressive 5.5 lakh acres, making it one of the largest clean energy developments globally. Anant Ambani emphasized that the facility is engineered to deliver round-the-clock power at a gigawatt scale by seamlessly integrating solar generation with advanced battery energy storage systems. This integrated architecture is expected to establish the Kutch project as one of the world's most cost-effective sources of continuous green electricity.
Advancing Solar Manufacturing
Reliance has already operationalized its integrated new energy manufacturing ecosystem. The company's solar PV cell and module manufacturing lines are active, having produced nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of heterojunction technology (HJT) modules. These HJT modules offer superior performance, including higher energy yield, better temperature performance, and reduced degradation compared to conventional technologies. Reliance is also the first Indian company to receive Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) certification for its HJT technology.
The company is committed to establishing a fully integrated solar manufacturing capacity of 20 GW annually, encompassing the entire value chain from polysilicon and ingots to wafers, cells, modules, and glass.
Battery Gigafactory and Green Hydrogen Initiatives
Further strengthening its green energy portfolio, Reliance confirmed that the first phase of its 40 GWh battery and cell gigafactory is on track for commissioning within the current year. The company plans to scale its annual battery capacity to 120 GWh, positioning Reliance as a leading global manufacturer of lithium iron phosphate batteries.
Reliance's green hydrogen ambitions also remain robust. The company recently secured a significant $3 billion green ammonia agreement with Samsung C&T, one of the largest such off-take deals globally. Discussions are reportedly in advanced stages for additional export agreements with clients in Japan, South Korea, and Europe, reinforcing Reliance's target of developing 3 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen equivalent chemicals capacity over the next decade.
Economic Impact and Future Vision
The combined development of the Jamnagar Green Energy Giga Complex and the Kutch renewable energy hub is anticipated to create approximately two lakh new green jobs. Anant Ambani articulated a bold vision for India's role in the global energy transition, stating, "The world built its old energy on Middle Eastern oil. The world will now build its new energy on Indian sunshine." He highlighted that this clean energy transition will reduce import dependence, boost exports, lower energy costs, support India's climate goals, and drive inclusive economic growth.
