Mumbai's New Green Lung Announced
At the 49th Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries (RIL) in 2026, Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, unveiled the ambitious Coastal Road Gardens project. This transformative initiative, planned along Mumbai’s Coastal Road South, is set to convert 130 acres of waterfront into a premier recreational, ecological, and cultural hub for the city.
The project, designed as a family-friendly destination, will offer a wide array of attractions and facilities, aiming to enhance both biodiversity and community engagement across Mumbai's coastline.
A Hub for Nature and Recreation
The expansive Coastal Road Gardens project is designed to become a significant "green lung" for Mumbai, housing over 60,000 trees. The proposed plan dedicates more than 50% of the area to lush, forest-style landscapes, with approximately 25% allocated for open recreational zones, and the remaining space for food plazas and pedestrian pathways.
Diverse Attractions for All Ages
- A beach boardwalk and coastal gardens
- Sunset viewing points and a dedicated bird trail
- A petting zoo and art studios nestled within green spaces
- A prominent Ferris wheel
- Dedicated children's play areas in key neighborhoods like Nepean Sea Road, Haji Ali Junction, and Worli
World-Class Sports Facilities
Sports infrastructure forms a major component of the Coastal Road Gardens project. Plans include courts for tennis, pickleball, badminton, and basketball, alongside full-sized football grounds and cricket turfs, providing extensive opportunities for community sports and recreation.
Embracing Ecology and Culture
The initiative emphasizes ecological restoration, featuring tropical vegetation with coconut, palm, and broadleaf trees to foster a richer urban ecosystem. Select sections will also adopt the Miyawaki method, a Japanese urban forestry technique known for creating dense, fast-growing forests that significantly boost biodiversity. Additionally, cultural and wellness spaces are proposed, including an amphitheater, yoga zones, walking trails, and a common prayer area near the Mahalaxmi Temple. The waterfront destination is also expected to be pet-friendly, further blending recreation with conservation.
Mumbai's Iconic New Landmark
"The Coastal Road Gardens will be a tribute to the spirit of Mumbai, a place for every Mumbaikar to reconnect with nature, and an investment in the long-term health of our city. Every great city has an iconic garden by which it is known. What Central Park is to New York, Hyde Park to London, and the Botanic Gardens to Singapore, we hope the Coastal Road Gardens will be to Mumbai," Nita Ambani stated.
Once completed, the Coastal Road Gardens project is poised to emerge as one of Mumbai’s largest urban green and leisure developments, fundamentally reshaping the city’s coastline and creating vital new public spaces for residents and visitors alike.
