A tragic incident unfolded near a Ganesh pandal in Mumbai's Lalbaug area, resulting in the deaths of an eight-year-old girl and a woman due to electrocution. Four other individuals sustained injuries in the accident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The electrocution took place around 2:20 am near the Kalachowki Vibhag Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal on Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki. Large crowds had gathered for the ongoing Ganapati festival when the unfortunate event occurred.
The eight-year-old victim was identified as Raghni Ghanshyam Yadav, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at Masina Hospital in Byculla. A second victim, identified as 33-year-old Sujata, a woman admitted to Global Hospital in Parel, later succumbed to her injuries.
Four other individuals were injured and received medical treatment. They were identified as Kiran Akbar Naik (19), Tanvi Narsh Hande (19), Sahil Sandip Tare (19), and Ruhi Singh (12). Ruhi Singh was reported to be in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit, while the others remain under medical observation.
Investigation Underway
Following the incident, police personnel at the scene confirmed that the victims suffered electric shock and burn injuries. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) officials initiated an immediate inspection of the site.
The BMC reported that the incident occurred near the entrance gate of the Mahaganpati Utsav Mandal at Digvijay Mill Chawl, specifically near pole number DLM-14. BEST officials discovered that a temporary meter (M217392), installed for the Ganesh festival's illumination and a cold drink stall, had its wiring and MCB disconnected by a local electrician.
Police are actively investigating the precise source of the electric current and assessing the overall condition of the temporary electrical installation. Further details regarding the cause of the electrocution and any potential actions against those responsible are anticipated as the inquiry progresses.
