· · 2 min read

Facebook and Instagram experienced a massive global outage on June 12, 2026, leaving millions of users unable to log in, refresh feeds, or send messages. Meta Platforms has not yet released details on the cause or an estimated restoration timeline.

A widespread global outage severely impacted Meta Platforms' services, Facebook and Instagram, on June 12, 2026. Millions of users worldwide found themselves unable to access their accounts, refresh feeds, or send messages, sparking significant digital disruption.

Users Logged Out, Feeds Unresponsive

The technical issues began surfacing around 10:00 AM ET. Instagram users were met with persistent "could not refresh feed" error messages. Simultaneously, Facebook users reported being abruptly logged out of both their mobile applications and desktop browsers, with no means to re-authenticate.

The scale of the problem quickly became apparent, with outage tracking website Downdetector recording a massive surge in complaints. Within minutes, over 100,000 users reported issues with Facebook alone, while Instagram and Facebook Messenger also experienced widespread loading failures.

Migration to Alternative Platforms

As Meta's core platforms went dark, users rapidly migrated to alternative social media platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter), to confirm the widespread blackout. Hashtags like #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown quickly trended globally, filled with users sharing memes, seeking status updates, and questioning the extent of the infrastructure collapse.

Meta Silent on Cause and Restoration

As of the latest reports, Meta Platforms has not issued a formal statement detailing the exact technical cause of the dual-platform failure. Furthermore, the company has not provided an expected timeline for a full service restoration, leaving millions of users stranded and awaiting updates.
