New Delhi, India – In a significant move to foster technological independence, India has accelerated its artificial intelligence development by approving 12 new projects under the ambitious IndiaAI Mission. This initiative, valued at Rs 10,371.92 crore, aims to build a robust, self-reliant AI ecosystem, a strategic pivot underscored by the recent global concerns following the restriction of access to Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.
The ban on foreign advanced AI models like Fable 5 has reignited global discussions around "Sovereign AI" – the concept of nations developing their own AI capabilities to control data, infrastructure, and model access. For India, this translates into a concerted effort to reduce dependence on international AI providers and ensure local organizations have access to domestically developed tools.
Fostering a Self-Reliant AI Ecosystem
The IndiaAI Mission is designed to cultivate a comprehensive AI ecosystem, encompassing everything from foundational research to practical applications. The 12 approved projects will focus on developing diverse AI systems, including advanced language models, intuitive voice assistants, and multimodal AI capable of processing text, images, and video.
Leading the charge is the IIT Bombay-led BharatGen consortium, which has secured Rs 1,058.52 crore in government funding. BharatGen's primary objective is to build open-weight multilingual and multimodal AI models, addressing India's diverse linguistic landscape.
Key Projects and Strategic Allocations
Among the twelve chosen projects, several key players have received significant backing to propel India's AI ambitions forward:
- Sarvam AI: Received the largest allocation in compute support, totaling Rs 246.72 crore, indicating a focus on foundational AI infrastructure.
- Gnani AI: Allocated Rs 177.27 crore to develop voice-native models, crucial for expanding AI accessibility across various user interfaces.
- BharatGen (IIT Bombay Consortium): As mentioned, secured Rs 1,058.52 crore for open-weight multilingual and multimodal models.
- Gan AI: Awarded Rs 110.03 crore.
- Soket AI Labs: Received Rs 177.08 crore.
- Avataar AI: Secured Rs 16.10 crore.
- Fractal Analytics Ltd.: Allocated Rs 137.91 crore.
- Tech Mahindra Maker's Lab: Received Rs 2.66 crore.
- Zenteq (ZenteiQ.ai): Awarded Rs 206.49 crore.
- GenLoop (Genloop Intelligence): Secured Rs 2.61 crore.
- Intellihealth (NeuroDX): Received Rs 49.50 crore.
