Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office. He surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru's elected tenure and received international congratulations for this historic milestone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially become India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister, marking a historic milestone by completing 4,399 days in office. This achievement, reached on June 10, 2026, sees him surpass the elected tenure of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, by a single day.

Modi first assumed the prime ministerial office on May 26, 2014, following a decisive electoral victory. He was subsequently re-elected in 2019 and secured a third consecutive term in 2024, maintaining an unbroken run as an elected head of government since his initial win.

Comparing Prime Ministerial Tenures

Jawaharlal Nehru served as Prime Minister from India's independence on August 15, 1947, until his passing in May 1964. However, his tenure as the head of an elected government began after India's first general election in 1951–52. From May 13, 1952, to May 27, 1964, Nehru served for a total of 4,398 days in an elected capacity.

While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi held office for a longer overall period, her tenure was non-continuous, interrupted by an electoral defeat in 1977 following the Emergency period.
