Political strategist and Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has established a notable lead in the ongoing Bankipur Assembly by-election. As of Monday, August 3, 2026, after nine rounds of vote counting, Kishor has secured 17,856 votes, placing him 5,272 votes ahead of the BJP's candidate, Neeraj Kumar Sinha, who has garnered 12,584 votes.
This development poses a significant challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has maintained continuous control over the Bankipur constituency, formerly known as Patna West, since 1995. The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April.
High Stakes in Urban Patna
Bankipur, an urban constituency nestled in the heart of Patna, Bihar, has long been considered a BJP bastion. In the 2025 Assembly elections, Nitin Nabin had secured his fifth consecutive term, defeating RJD's Rekha Gupta by over 50,000 votes. This time, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate, Rekha Gupta, is trailing in third place with 3,449 votes.
The BJP has fielded youth wing leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha for the bypoll, while Prashant Kishor, making one of his most significant electoral bids since entering active politics, is contesting on behalf of the Jan Suraaj Party. With 31 rounds of counting scheduled, the final outcome remains eagerly anticipated, though Kishor's current lead indicates a potential shift in the political landscape of this crucial seat.
Reactions and Outlook
Despite the early trends favoring Kishor, Bihar minister Shrawon Kumar from the NDA alliance emphasized that these are preliminary results. "These are early trends. The picture will become clear after a few more rounds of counting. We are hopeful that the mandate will be in the NDA's favour because we have worked for the development of people irrespective of caste, religion or creed," Kumar stated, expressing confidence in a BJP victory.
Ahead of the counting, both major parties displayed optimism. RJD working president Tejashwi Yadav offered prayers at the Baba Harihar Nath temple in Sonepur, while BJP workers ordered sweets across Patna, anticipating a win for Sinha. The by-election, held on July 30, recorded a voter turnout of 34.30%, a decrease from the 41.45% observed in the 2025 Assembly election.
